During my studies I chose to explore cultural identity through the game of chess, designing a unique chess set that represents Sephardic and Ashkenazi religious communities. Each chess piece was hand-sculpted from clay, with careful attention to traditional clothing, symbols, and gestures characteristic of each group. I also designed a custom chessboard featuring typography that reflects the visual language and cultural tone of each side—one typeface representing the Sephardic community, and a contrasting one for the Ashkenazi. The result is a dialogue between heritage and design, expressed through a familiar game reimagined as a cultural encounter. Made at Wizo Academy of design, Guidance by Terry Schrer.
